Laws of man don't exist anymore. The law of nature is the only rule. There is no punishment for those who prey on the weak and unprepared. There are no consequences for taking a life.

Out there on the road what people carry on their backs or in their pockets is more valuable than their lives. It's easier to steal from the dead. It's just the way things are now.

When I escaped Atlanta after the power died, I thought the only way I would survive was to be on my own. I was wrong. I did survive long enough to find them - to find her. They gave me a reason to keep fighting. They gave me a place to call home. When you have something worth taking, others will come for it. They always come for it.

We have to leave our town in order to save it. We have to leave the ones we love in order to protect them. We will be the punishment. We are the consequences.

The Fall (Without 2) picks up about 2 and a half months after the first book finishes. Henry, our main character, is back again, only this time, we don’t have to wait til the last word of the book to know his name. With his newfound friends and family, he has made himself a home in Stevenson, Alabama. It’s been 5 months since all electrical devices came to a dead stop, and everyone was thrown back into the 19th century. If that wasn’t bad enough, mother nature has declared war with cannon ball sized hail, hellacious lightning, subzero temperatures, among many, many other obstacles. Thankfully, they’ve now had time to notice the subtle shift in the air, and usually have a few minutes warning before nature decides to cast it’s wrath on the earth. Life is hard, but they’ve pulled together, along with Scottsboro and Bridgeport, and have managed to keep everyone in the towns safe from refugees and looters, as well as other undesirables...that is, until they come across a military group, made up of more militia than true soldiers. Now they need to risk their lives to make the trek to where the majority of them are stationed, risking their lives, and leaving loved ones behind. Just to find out what the groups intentions are, and determine whether their community is truly safe.
As we all know, the best made plans often go awry. Now Henry, faced with loss, death, revenge, and protecting his friends and family, has to make a decision on who to trust, all based off of a 30 second conversation with a gun to his back. What could possibly go wrong?
I warned you, E.E. Borton was a author to watch out for, and I wasn’t kidding. In hiis first three books (Abomination, Suffer, Without) you see a dramatic change in not just his writing confidence, but in his style. He tried putting humor in those first three, where it just didn’t belong. Dark humor is GREAT, but trying to describe a horrific death humorously just didn’t work. He got away from that in this book (and his 4th, Suffer 2, as well) and leaves the humor to conversations between characters to lighten up the mood. MUCH BETTER.
Borton is incredibly descriptive, without getting boring, you pick up detailed information from the storyline, instead of going through a ton of tedious backstory/description. I know authors that can write chapters on just description, and it takes so much away from the pace of the story. Borton doesn’t do that, and he still manages to make you feel like you know the characters, like you’re right there with them. I’m not gonna lie. Viscerally, he got *ME* near the end there, that’s damn near impossible, so, once again, I’m super impressed and can’t wait to see what’s next!

WITHOUT II The Fall EE Borton 9780989297967 Books Reviews

Without II by E.E. Borton, the sequel to Without, is a wonderful story. It continues where the first book lets off.

Henry is fully healed of the woulds inflicted by Reverend Rick at his Fort God compound. Now his mission is to head North to eliminate the threat posed by General Castle.

Henry and four associates battle kidnappers, storms and Castle's troops before they face the General himself. At times it seems as if all the world is aligned against them as they fight forces at every turn.

The writing is very good, with few if any problems concern spelling and grammar. This makes any book so much easier to read and understand. Thanks for that!

Any book about the end of modern civilation always concerns me since more often than not, things portrayed by the author are simply blown all out of proportion. E.E. Borton keeps things fairly simple. The stories he writes only refer to the obvious hazards and conditions that would clearly happen if the lights went out across the country. The lifestyle would return to things of the 1800s. Tasks that we could do with electric power, now have to be done by hand and labor. Gardening would no longer be a hobby, but a necessity. Raising and butchering animals for food would be upon each family. Hunting would become necessary to survive. In the cities, hundreds of thousands would die.

This is the world in which these stories take place. Then there are those men who decide to take what others have by any means necessary. Every community has someone who would rather live by the sweat of someone else's brow.

This book revolves around those men who are willing to do rough things in order to protect their community from those who would take what they want by force. This is the story you need to read. Without and Without II.

Have fun!
